Patrice Isley sings “Free”-ly on Niecy cover

(March 18, 2024) Singer Patrice Isley doesn’t hide her love of classic soul music, and the five-octave songstress has weaved that love throughout her career. She has worked over the years with such all-timers as Philip Bailey, El Debarge and Gladys Knight, and in her own recording career, she has mixed a number of classic covers alongside her new music.

For her lastest single, Patrice pays tribute to the great Deniece Williams, covering one of Niecy’s most iconic songs, “Free.” Patrice shares, “I loved this song as a little girl. I loved Deniece’s voice. It was easy to sing along with. The chorus was beautifully ‘catchy,’ and the message was strong, ‘I want to be Free!'”

On her cover, Patrice stays true to Niecy’s original version, adding a few music touches (such as a tasty guitar solo), but also staying faithful with her clear, crisp vocal performance. It is impossible to improve on the original, but Patrice Isley handles “Free” in fine fashion, and perhaps introduces another generation to this classic song.
