James Holland of early soul group The Holidays dies at age 81

(March 2, 2023) We are sad to report today the passing of James Holland of the Detroit singing group The Holidays. He was 81.

The Holidays were among the popular doo-wop groups that filled the small studios of Detroit in the 1950s and 60s, outside of Motown. In fact, there were several entirely different versions of The Holidays (including the Royal Holidays, the New Holidays, and the Four Hollidays), and many of the rotating members of the group went on to major careers in the musical world. But to Northern Soul fans in Europe, and to deep soul fans in the US, there was an awful lot of great music that came from this unheralded group, and James Holland was in the center of many of the acts most popular songs.

There is an excellent, detailed review of The Holidays at the Soulful Detroit website. To read more about them and about James Holland, click here.
