One Nation Under the Soul Shack (ONUTSS)
It’s tough to believe that New York-based independent music promotion company, One Nation Under The Soul Shack (ONUTSS) has just been around since August 2006. The founders, Detrel Howell and Pamela Nichols, have made such an impact bringing music loving audiences and independent artists together that it seems like they’ve been on the scene forever. Their "listening parties" have grown to must-see after work events and New York music fans have looked to the duo to introduce them to the best in indie soul artists. Importantly, ONUTSS never charges an admission fee, asking the audiences instead to purchase the performing artists’ CDs.
First year events included listening parties with a "who’s who" of indie soul, including Choklate, Marcell and The Truth, Mike Hammond, Brown Baby Girl Eric Roberson, Gordon Chambers, Myoshi Marilla, Brown Rice, Elisabeth Withers, Antonia Jenae, Jeremiah, June April, Karen Bernod, Maya Azucena, Rahbi, Anthony Dixon, Ty Causey, Melissa Young, Jerome and Kendra Ross. And in early 2007, ONUTSS hosted Kevin Harewood’s book release party for Make Your Move!!! and later in the year joined forces with Greenehouse Entertainment for a screening of the documentary, Before The Music Dies.
If music has a reputation as a cutthroat business, than Pam and Trel prove that there is a place for good people doing good things to advance the cause of soul music. It’s been only a little over a year…but what a year!
