It’s been over a decade since Shaun Escoffery broke out with the big international hits “Space Rider” and “Days Like This.” The London-born singer began recording with UK band D’Influence while still in his teens. Along the way he enjoyed support from Elton John – who has hailed Escoffery as one of his favorite new artists – and actor Idris Elba (The Wire, Long Walk To Freedom), a lifelong friend with whom he has co-written songs and who has contributed remixes.
The expressive singer with the great range has been out of the recording spotlight for a minute, instead focusing on musical theatre (such as “Mama I Want to Sing” with Chaka Khan as well as “The Lion King”). But Shaun is coming back in a big way with his brilliant new album In The Red Room, on Dome Records. It is a record that will energize his longtime fans and certainly make him new ones. Chicago’s Dusty Groove enthuses: “We haven’t heard from Shaun in years – but damn, it’s really been worth the wait. The album really knocks it out of the park from the very first note – and pushes Shaun way way further than his previous work, which we loved a lot, into some kind of sublime classic soul territory….”
Much of the initial attention on the album has been due to Shaun’s first single, “Nature’s Call.” Bringing a classic Curtis Mayfield-like falsetto that goes along with a killer groove and a message about the world that will resonate with listeners, it is one of the great songs of the Fall. And we’re proud to make “Nature’s Call” our Song of the Month for October. Watch the video below and then check out Shaun’s album at Amazon.com.
