In the early days of SoulTracks, there was no band that connected more with our audiences than the soulful house trio, Tortured Soul. Then consisting of Ethan White, Jason Kriveloff and group drummer and lead vocalist John-Christian Urich, TS brought infectious hooks and pop sensibilities to the dance music of the 00s. Their debut album, Introducing Tortured Soul, spent three full months at the top of the SoulTracks charts. And they’ve remained recording and touring giants of the dance world ever since.
Now, as the trio, featuring Urich, Jordan Scannella, and Isamu MacGregor (who replaced the deceased White), passes its 20th anniversary via a new collection, we take a look back at one of our all-time favorite TS songs. “Don’t Hold Me Down” was made for the dancefloor, but Urich’s vocal back-and-forth with labelmate Monet, who showed off her smooth upper register, gave it a classic R&B duet feel.
“Don’t Hold Me Down” sounds as good now as it did back in 2004. So good, that we’ve made it our latest SoulTracks Looks Back entry. Check it out below and groove again with Tortured Soul.
