Lost Gem Unvaulted: The Stylistics keep their “Promise”

stylisticss1996

Veteran soul music journalist David Nathan and venerable producer-songwriter Preston Glass have teamed up for a second volume of Philly Soul Select, featuring an assortment of contemporary interpretations of classic R&B tunes emanating from the City of Brotherly Love. Alongside new recordings, an oft-overlooked gem cut by The Stylistics with Glass in 1996 is included.

The Felton Pilate-penned and co-produced “Keeping You to Your Promise” is a serenely charming ballad in the tradition of The Stylistics’ signature ‘70s hits. The timeless lyrics and organically flowing melodies are brought to life in remarkably compelling form by Airrion Love, while Russell Thompkins, Jr., and Herb Murrell supply lovingly subtle and soulful harmonies. Glass’ arrangement is faithful to the group’s definitive sweet-soul musicality and blends wonderfully with the emotive changes and dynamics.
