One of the highlights for us every year is the amazing Detroit Jazz Festival. And a clear highlight of that show is the annual appearance of The Mack Avenue SuperBand. For the uninitiated, The Mack Avenue SuperBand is an all-star ensemble of bandleaders from the superb roster of the Motor City jazz label. The SuperBand comprises a distinctive blend of generations and styles which capture the diversity of the label itself. This mix of veteran players and top young talent truly represents this hometown label with each member bringing performances and writing chops that are top shelf each year.
So, on the first weekend of September, the fourth configuration of the group — consisting of bassist and musical director Christian McBride, pianist Christian Sands, trumpeter Freddie Hendrix, alto saxophonist Tia Fuller, tenor saxophonist and longtime SoulTracks fave Kirk Whalum, vibraphonist Gary Burton, and drummer Carl Allen – wowed the packed outdoor audience with a stellar set.
That tremendous concert was captured on tape and is now being released in the form of the new CD, Live from the Detroit Jazz Festival 2015. We’re proud to present this collection as our newest SoulTracks Listening Room. So check out the Mack Avenue SuperBand below and enjoy greatness!
