Like many small children, Elgin Lumpkin grew up a huge Michael Jackson fan. I was a little kid when I saw Motown 25 anniversary performance by Michael Jackson. My aunt gave me a glittery glove, my mom bought me a red leather jacket and I spent all my time dancing and singing. By the tender age of 12 Lumpkin had joined a small local singing group in the DC area, Finesse five. As he matured into a young adult, he faced many battles with his parents. He left his parents DC home and dabbled in construction work and the fast-food industry. Little did he know, he would go from may I take your order to calling the shots as an R&B game changer.

During the 90s, the R&B group Jodeci was monopolizing the airwaves. Jodeci member and producer Devante Swing discovered not only Ginuwine, but mega producers and rappers Timbaland and Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott.  The three shared a home for a short time while developing their individual crafts. Ginuwine continued to work alongside Timbaland in preparation for releasing his freshman disc under Sony BMG Music Entertainment.
