(August 5, 2024) One way to judge a song’s quality is by the variety of artists who seek to remake it. By that measure, “Don’t Turn Around” can be called a hidden gem. The Albert Hammond/Diane Warren penned tune might not have been covered as much as “Yesterday,” however, singers representing multiple genres have been moved the lyrics telling the story of a person who doesn’t want their departing lover to see their anguish, and decided to give the tune their unique spin.
Tina Turner’s original pop/rock version debuted in 1986. Since then, soul singer Luther Ingram, rocker Bonnie Tyler, reggae group Aswad, pop group Ace of Base and the legendary Neil Diamond are among the musical acts who put their interpretations on “Don’t Turn Around.”
Now we can add Will Downing, the King of Sophisticated Soul, to that list. Downing’s version mixes smooth jazz infused R&B that he is famous for with Afro-Caribbean percussion and keyboards. Downing said the decision to incorporate those reggae elements into his take on “Don’t Turn Around” was a nod and homage to Aswad, the British reggae group that infused their songs with R&B and soul. Downing noted that Aswad’s version of Don’t Turn Around his favorite version of the song.
