(July 18, 2025) Some vocalists know how to sing; others know how to “sang.” Wendy Moten is one who does the latter.
A Memphis native, Wendy has been on the music scene for over 30 years since her 1992 debut, establishing herself as a versatile artist who is comfortable in multiple genres like R&B/Soul, jazz, and country. In 2021, Wendy showcased her vocal mastery on Season 21 of The Voice, where she finished as the runner-up, belting out songs by Aretha Franklin and Dolly Parton with ease.
The judges and TV audience learned something that Wendy’s fans realized long ago – she knows how to make a song her own. I first heard her on Kirk Whalum’s 1998 cover of Stevie Wonder’s “All I Do.” Her soulful powerhouse vocals took the song to another stratosphere. So when I saw that she was remaking TLC’s 1995 hit “Waterfalls,” I was all ears.
The classic song is unique for addressing social ills like drug dealing and promiscuity in a palatable way. The lyrics warn against “chasing waterfalls” or, in other words, participating in risky behaviors. Produced by Grammy-winning jazz guitarist Paul Brown, Wendy’s rendition converts this hip-hop/R&B message song into a jazzy tune with a little bop, while maintaining a tone of seriousness.
“Waterfalls”, which is Wendy’s fourth release this year, is available July 21st. Check out the World Premiere below. And congratulations to Wendy for her upcoming induction into the Memphis Music Hall of Fame in September 2025!
