(June 8, 2020) War & Pierce is one of those groups that falls firmly in the ‘you’ve heard them even if you have not heard of them,’ camp. Guitarist Sunny War performed with or opened for legends such as Keb Mo, Booker T. , Angelique Kidjo and Mavis Staples. The music and voice of Chris Pierce has been heard on films and TV shows such as This is Us, Rosewood, Soul Men and Crash. He’s shared stages with Al Green, Buddy Guy, Keb Mo and Jill Scott, just to name a few. Pierce has also released eight independent albums.
The two, along with Jared Faber, himself a highly regarded songwriter and producer, give a preview of what listeners can expect on their upcoming project 21 Century with the song “Amen.”
“Amen” is a track that erases the lines between secular and sacred as well as country, soul and contemporary hip-hop infused R&B. Sunny War’s intricate guitar picking will allow listeners to understand why Rolling Stone magazine pegged her as “one of 10 new country artists you need to know.” The way that Chris Pierce’s buttery falsetto caresses and enunciates “Amen’s” politically charged yet spiritually profound lyrics brings to mind Curtis Mayfield. Meanwhile, the programmed drums mix with the bass and keyboards to give younger generation something to grab unto. “Amen” is a track that offers something for everyone. Check the video out here.
