(April 23, 2019) SoulTracks is based in Detroit, but over the past few years it may seem like we’ve picked up and moved to the Pacific Northwest. The city of Portland and its emerging soul music scene have been front and center for us for awhile, and it seems like every couple of weeks we hear something new and special coming from that city.

That trend continues this week with a brand new joint from drummer supreme Tyrone Hendrix, who we introduced earlier this year to SoulTrackers. This time around, Mr. Hendrix brings along noted Rip City vocalist Jarrod Lawson and trumpeter Farnell Newton for a tasty, jazzy jam that shows both the trio’s musical chops as well as their ability to draw from soul, jazz and even funk elements.

Tyrone tells us “‘The Battle’ is a collaboration with what I call the Dream Team: Jarrod Lawson, Farnell Newton and Myself. It’s got that D’Angelo vibe with the J Dilla backbeat. Jarrod sums the songs story in the second verse when he talk about the Battle between the Body and Soul. From the First Downbeat this Song will have you attention.”

“The Battle” is all that, and should find its way onto the playlists of soul music fans all over the world. And we’re proud to be presenting the World Premiere of this cool new piece in Portland’s growing wall of top notch music. Check it out below and tell us what you think!
