(September 15, 2022) Is comparison truly the thief of joy or is it a way to prevent a person from settling? On their latest song “Something Like This,” Dutch band Tristan makes the case that both are true. I mean, can you really be happy when you constantly see the kind of ideal relationship that you and your partner will never possess?
Tristan wraps that serious question around an instrumental arrangement that is relentlessly analog, funky and fun. Vocalist Jaycilee delivers a performance that matches the energy of the instrumental performance laid down by her four bandmates and the urgency of the situation presented in the lyrics.
Jaycilee is a young singer who possesses the background to interpret a song that is rooted in 1970s soul and pop. The daughter of a professional musician, Jaycilee often accompanied her dad to gigs and she’d be singing on stage by the age of 14.
“Something Like This” expresses the sentiments of an idealist and hopeless romantic who believes the moon is the only thing to shoot for. Anything else is settling. Check out the World Premiere of Jaycilee and bandmates Coen Molenaar, Frans Vollink, Sebastiaan Cornelissen and Guy Nikkels on “Something Like This.”
