First Listen: Toni Braxton shimmers on new “Dance” single

(August 6, 2020) In 2020, SoulTracks has embraced international multi-hit maker Toni Braxton on several occasions.  And it is quite understandable, considering the nearly near three decades that fans have gravitated to her unapologetic ballads – sealed and sent with her magnetic sultry, powerful pipes. And it has been an extremely busy 2020 for Braxton beginning with “Do It,” the first single off her upcoming full-length, Spell My Name, followed by her duet with silky R&B stylist Kem on an enchanting seventies flavored gem entitled “Live Out Your Love.”

Shifting in a slightly different direction, Braxton returns with a midtempo dancefloor filler from Spell My Name, “Dance” (Island Records).  This crisp production piloted by “Dance” co-writer and Braxton collaborator, Antonio Dixon, glides on a funky bed of punctuated strings and horns, frosted with sweet popping bass.  While this track is not in her ballad wheelhouse, Braxton’s trademark vocal stamp still rules when expressing brutal honesty :  “Found out just the other day/That you were giving it away/I found out just the other day/I ain’t gonna’ make you stay.”  In other words, Braxton always lets the truth set her free.  So, go ahead and join the dance.
