First Listen: Chicago’s Jason Scheff helps Tomi Malm to “Walk” on great debut

(October 17, 2017) If the vocal lead on the new release by Finnish music man Tomi Malm sound familiar, it should: it the voice of Jason Scheff, lead singer for the R&R Hall of Fame band Chicago for more than three decades. And it is fitting that Mr. Scheff should lend his talents to the debut album by Malm, a songwriter, musician and producer with a classic sense of song structure and melody.

Malm has been playing around Northern Europe for two decades, but this his first foray into releasing an album under his name. And he’s put together a terrific band of A-List musicians, including a full horn section, who have worked with some of the biggest names in music.

The album’s title track, “Walkin’ On Air,” is an upbeat number that has the kind of full-bodied arrangement that is rare to find in 2017. Jazz star Eric Marienthal brings a killer sax solo, and Scheff’s lead vocals are bright and engaging. And it is simply a fun song.

We’re happy to feature “Walkin’ On Air” as our newest SoulTracks First Listen. Check it out below and be prepared to smile.
