(July 5, 2020) Tomi Jenkins created a Hall of Fame career as a singing and songwriting member of one of the greatest funk bands of the past half century, Cameo. But for the past few years, he has been using his talent as a solo artist, and he has brought his many fans with him.
While we last heard Tomi on the fun dance hall shaker, “To The Floor,” he returns this Summer with a more serious number that addresses perhaps the most important social issue today. “Whatever It Takes” is a response to the George Floyd killing, and to the killings that led up to it, with a defiant tone that lets this listener know that this time, the community demands action: “No justice, No peace.”
Tomi tells us about the song, “When I was with Cameo, we wrote songs like Skin I’m In and Talkin’ Out The Side Of Your Neck to define how we felt about the socio-political times of the day. The murders by police and private citizens of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmed Arbery, Rayshard Brooks, Sandra Bland, Trayvon Martin, Rodney King, Natasha McKenna, Tamir Rice, and tragically so many others before and after inspired me to articulate my anger in words. The music, by my long-time producing partner Lee Hurst, was the perfect conduit for this expression.”
