First Listen: V10 The Power Band knows “All About Love”

(May 2, 2023) Reading the credits on trombonist Dan Freeman’s new song “All About Love” is like taking a trip back in time. His group, The V10 Power Band, is an authentic power band that features a rhythm section with a flesh and blood drummer on the skins, a brass section with trombone, tenor sax and trumpet. The V10 Power Band sports five backing vocalists – including Freeman – who support lead singers Duane Lucas and Freeman.

The V10 Power band, named after the Dodge Viper muscle car, might be an oddity now, but such a lineup was par for the course during R&B’s self-contained band era of the mid 1960s to the mid 1980s. Leader Freeman said all of this is intentional. Freeman wanted the band’s upcoming album, Real Songs, The Back in the Day Project, to capture the sound and feel of that era’s music.

The Denver based band succeeds on “All About Love,” which is the project’s lead single. The tune is a brassy number that also features rock influenced guitars and a jumping, funky bass line. Lead vocalists Lucas and Freeman use their soulful vocals to remind listeners that love is vital to any healthy relationship. In fact, it’s impossible for a relationship to survive without love.
