First Listen: The Freedom Affair gives classic soul shine to “Give A Little Love”

(February 6, 2021) Kansas City has a rich musical history that goes back a century, but it has been known more for football than soul over the past decade. Maybe that equation will change with the emergence of the 9-piece R&B band The Freedom Affair.

Boasting classic rhythm and horn sections behind powerful vocalists Paula Saunders, Misha Roberts and Seyko Groves, The Family Affair would have been a great fit in the Stax stable of the late 60s, mixed in with the happy vibes of the California sound of the same era. The four year old group, formed by drummer Dave Brick and bass player Chris Hazelton, is gathering a worldwide following of deep soul fans looking for the full bodied sounds of the Golden Age of Soul Music, all brought forward to 2021.

The band’s debut album, Freedom Is Love, certainly hit a chord with us, as represented by the new single and video for the midtempo gem, “Give A Little Love.”

There is something special coming from KC beyond Patrick Mahomes, and we’re glad to present an absolute surprise treat in The Freedom Affair. Check them out below and tell us what you think.
