(May 9, 2022) In this ever-evolving world of R&B/Soul Music, one thing that is relatively constant is the scrutiny that occurs when a singer attempts to cover legendary artists or artists that left us too soon. The late great Gerald LeVert is an artist that fits both of those categories and it is rare for a singer to approach any musical page of his songbook.
Despite the hesitation many have faced with approaching Gerald’s catalog, Memphis singer/songwriter Terry Harris takes the challenge head on. His latest single is an updated version of “Mr. Too Damn Good,” which was a Top 20 hit from Gerald’s 2000 album G.
Harris slows the tempo of the original version, and the result is a solid ballad that worthily revisits a classic. Harris’s vocal delivery and nuances will make every former member of Gerald’s fan club wonder if this was indeed an alternate version recorded by Gerald himself. The vocal similarities are present between LeVert and Harris, but Harris updates the arrangement and brings an ending to the song that provides the closure that a ballad of this magnitude should have. Harris plays to his vocal strengths, and is rather effective in protecting the legacy of one of R&B’s most distinct voices.
For those wondering if this is just a one-off tribute, have no fear as Terry is working on a full EP entitled The Soul of Gerald LeVert. In the meantime, check out “Mr. Too Damn Good,” and welcome an artist who captures the spirit of Gerald LeVert yet puts his own individual touch on the song.
