(August 1, 2022) “Good Woman,” the latest song by Texas native Tanya Nolan, tells the story of realization in a relationship: Nolan comes from the standpoint of a woman totally invested in a relationship who realizes that her supposed soulmate is not all in. Nolan also knows her worth, which explains the tune’s title.
The struggle Nolan outlines in “Good Woman” pits the physical excitement the man makes her feel against the knowledge that he’s just not that into her. The song is a bluesy, soulful statement of independence and that would fit right in with the athematic assertions of female self-worth that were a staple on R&B radio in the 1970s.
And Nolan has the pipes to pull it off. Her vocals build as the song progresses from her statement of recognition that this man has a physical and emotional hold on her to the simmering intensity that grows as she outlines her list of grievances. The lies, the lack of commitment and his inability to value the things that she brings to the table.
By the end of the song, as Nolan fully addresses how his mistreatment destroyed a love that was pure, it becomes clear that she’s sung herself free. “Good Woman” is the Galveston, Texas native’s latest visit to the charts, following 2021’s “Smile On My Face.” “Good Woman” is making its ascent on Billboard’s R&B Charts.
