First Listen: The glorious return of Stephanie Mills

(May 5, 2025) Classic R&B fans got a treat when they found out that Chaka Khan, Gladys Knight, Patti LaBelle, and Stephanie Mills are joining forces for the QUEENS TOUR, beginning May 9th. Fans of these legendary ladies are more than happy to see them in concert based on the hits they had during the height of their careers, but these same listeners no doubt rejoice when one of the aforementioned Queens releases new music.

Stephanie Mills has done just that, putting her touch on a Motown classic that was first recorded by Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell and then taken to new heights by Diana Ross – “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.”

Mills patterns her rendition after Ross’ remake, from the opening vocal run to reciting the spoken monologue. But it’s a bit different from what you may expect. Mills’ cover can fit into a house music playlist, with the likes of Robin S., Martha Wash, and Cece Peniston.

Mills calls her new single “a labor of love”, shouting out her producers – DJ Qua, DJ Walib, and Tiger Wilson. She also explained on social media the message behind her song choice: “I truly love my people. I need us to be better towards each other, be kind to each other, be respectful of each other and remember NOTHING can separate US from loving US!” The inference is that no mountain is too high to separate one from another. A powerful message indeed.
