First Listen: Jethro Decimus tells a stirring tale in “Exodus”

(June 8, 2017) — One of the newer vibrant voices and talents arising from the Caribbean islands, Jethro Decimus, was born in Sint-Maarten of Haitian descent. Decimus possesses an unmovable passion in maintaining a positive, hopeful look on life since he began producing his own music in 2012.  His latest E.P., Exodus, includes the Soca-driven “Long Time Ago In Bethlehem” (AKA “Mary’s Born Child” which was an international smash by Boney M).  Yet the title track, a gently soothing Reggae soundtrack of acoustic guitar and synthesizers, relays a compelling story, even if all too familiar.

Decimus’ unassuming voice and Danielle Lane’s powerful interjections on “Exodus” (“Come to life/Wipe away the tears/Come arise/We’re marching to freedom”) is further illustrated in the engaging, accompanying video – from the breaking of shackles worn during slavery to a newly found freedom of hope and joy.  The multilingual Decimus weaves English, French and Creole along with influences such as Bob Marley and the late Haitian rapper Black Alex in a fresh musical perspective that is worthy of one‘s ears for years to come.
