First Listen: Smokey Robinson returns with a top down jam

(February 28, 2025) He is one of those legendary artists whose first name alone is iconic and evokes decades of musical memories. He’s Smokey Robinson, and for most of us there isn’t a time in our life that didn’t include him and his music.

And now, at age 85, Smokey is still going strong and sounding great, as he prepares what he calls “my new inspirations album,” What the World Needs Now, due on April 25 on the Gaither Music label. And he gives us a sneak peek today with the first single, a smoothed out version of a 70s classic.

“Be Thankful for What You’ve Got” was a top down, windows open jam in the summer of 1974, and ultra-cool song (from the equally cool William DeVaughn.

Smokey delivers his 2025 version of that classic with his usual smooth vibe, and the always classy production of Warryn Campbell (Brandy, Mary Mary, Dru Hill). It is a cover that is both nostalgic and just right for this time a half century after the original.

Check out “Be Thankful For What You’ve Got” and welcome the great Smokey Robinson back to SoulTracks.
