(May 17, 2023) There are some musical artists who are naturally consummate entertainers. Ray Lavender already knew what he was going to be as he was growing up. And the Louisiana born talent has multi-tasked between his music and acting career for over 15 years, receiving the thumbs ups from media entrepreneur Tyler Perry (Lavender appeared in Perry’s Hell Hath No Fury Like Woman Scorned) and music industry businessman and fellow vocalist Akon.
Musically, Lavender’s inspirations turn to older school legends such as Sam Cooke and Luther Vandross. But his music leans more toward a mix of hip-hop and neo soul soundtracks. First Listen introduced Lavender’s slick tenor voice over a decade ago with “We Love,” a declaration of how much his lady love means to him despite the misunderstandings.
Fast forward to 2023, as Lavender continues his busy streak with several movies, plus a new record deal with Big Shot Music. His return to First Listen spotlights fantasy love in the highest degree on “Steppin’ With My Baby.” The mellow backdrop of funky guitar and electric piano waterfalls provided by producer J Hot surrounds Lavender’s smooth tale of focusing on his dream love with everything luxurious, including the cruises. Though the storyline is minimal, the steppers should dig the easy-going grooves and Lavender’s pure joy of being lovestruck. An upcoming full-length FaReal from Lavender is on the way. For now, it’s is time to step out to “Steppin With My Baby.”
