First Look: Sy Smith and Pete Escovedo celebrate a classic

(June 2, 2018) Legendary percussionist Pete Escovedo has provided the world with a treasure trove of music, as well as an incredibly talented percussionist daughter, Sheila E. And for his newest project, Mr. Escovedo has created a celebration of the music of the Bay Area, from Pete’s first gig at the California Hotel’s Gold Room in 1953 to the diverse blend of music which had emerged by the ’70s and is now known as the Bay Area Sound.

Escovedo says, “With this new project, I wanted to reach back and taste all those wonderful flavors of music that sadly aren’t as common as they used to be.” And he brings together an incredible amount of talent along, including Bobby Caldwell, Howard Hewett, and many more.

One of the cuts that caught our attention was the glorious remake of the classic Al Green hit, “Let’s Stay Together,” with a true Latin-meets-Soul sound that we love, and of course longtime ST fave Sy Smith taking the lead. It’s all captured in a fun new video that we think you’re going to dig. Check out “Let’s Stay Together” below and be sure to also seek out Back To The Bay.
