(June 28, 2024) Before the American Idol franchise became a national and international sensation, there were Star Search. That program lifted many artists to stardom and on to becoming highly regarded figures in the music industry after its launch in 1983.
Peggi Blu, the 1986 winner in the Female Vocalist category, had a distinguished career prior to competing on Star Search. She worked as a backing vocalist for jazz musicians like Archie Shepp, and pop icons such as Barbara Streisand and Bob Dylan. After her Star Search win, Blu provided backing vocals for a host of projects, including Quincy Jones’ Back on the Block album and Tracy Chapman’s Crossroads.
The talented Blu released three solo albums and charted with singles “Tender Moments” and “All The Way With You,” from her album Blu Blowin,’ released in 1987, the year after her Star Search win. Blu, who sadly passed away on May 19, had a broad musical palate. She was comfortable singing in multiple genres.
Expansion Records honors Peggi Blu’s life and legacy by releasing a soulful cover of Paul and LInda McCartney’s 1973 ballad “My Love.” This previously unreleased duet, recorded in the 1980s, pairs Blu with soul singer Rockie Robbins, who had a Top 10 hit in 1980 with the ballad “You and Me.”
In their hands, “My Love” has that ultra smooth sound of 1980s era Quiet Storm balladry. The song includes elements of jazz improvisation from the saxophone of Gerald Albright and swelling, gospel inspired backing vocals. To top it off, Blu and Robbins have wonderful vocal chemistry.
