First Listen: Angela Johnson and Opolopo deliver the “Love”

(July 28, 2024) You know the feeling that comes when you are with “your people.” These are the people who know you, love you and accept you totally. These are the folks who lift you spiritually and you are free to be unguarded and vulnerable around them because you know they would never do anything to hurt you.

Those are “your people.” They might be family, classmates, coworkers or longtime neighborhood friends. All you know is that you feel safe to be yourself around them, and that time flies whenever you and your people get together.

Longtime Soultracks fave Angela Johnson captures that feeling on “The Ones You Love,” the new lead single from her upcoming album with Opopolo, The Best of Both Worlds, which is scheduled to drop on Oct. 25. The song’s arrangement emits an upbeat and up tempo, breezy and optimistic vibe.

“The Ones You Love” is a fusion of funk and disco with a touch of jazzy piano at the end. The party vibes come from the hand claps that evoke to great party songs of the 1970s and 80s. “The Ones You Love” is a song that celebrates the relationships that often escape musical focus. Relationship songs most often address romantic relationships, which as we know from song titles, can wax and wane. “The Ones You Love” is a joyous celebration of the unbreakable bonds we form with “our people.” Check out “The Ones You Love” here.
