First Listen: Molly Green cherishes those “Late Nights”

(February 10, 2025) There’s something about musicians. They reveal what the rest of us mortals try to hide. That childhood trauma, bad breakup or dysfunctional relationship might end up being the topic of a song.

That’s what inspired singer/songwriter Molly Green to write the song “Late Nights,” which is featured in the First Listen. “Late Nights” tells the story of someone waiting way past bedtime for a partner who stopped for a drink at the local pub and never got restarted to complete the trip home.

“Late Night” follows the strategy to fusing an upbeat musical arrangement with lyrics that tell the story of a woman who has been supplanted by the bottle. Green’s sweet alto voice confides about trying to hold on out of love for her partner and her concern for their well-being even as her frustration with the antics grow.

For Green, “Late Nights” is torn from the pages of her life: “I wrote ‘Late Nights’ while standing in the kitchen, debating whether to make tea for one or two. It reflected a recurring issue in my relationship at the time, where frustration and a sense of neglect were starting to build. But alongside that, there was always this lighthearted affection, knowing how loved I was. The intentions were never malicious, which stirred up a mix of conflicting emotions.”
