(June 23, 2023) It’s great when good things happen to worthy people, and a lot of good things are happening to Melba Moore. Last year, she released a highly regarded album Imagine, and she received the Joseph R. Biden Lifetime Achievement Award and the Presidential Volunteer Service Award for her work in urban communities. She also earned her third SoulTracks Readers’ Choice Award. And coming later this year, Moore will receive a deserved star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
That star can be viewed as a culminating event, but Moore is a long way from being done. She can make music that will appeal to long time fans. Her latest song, a cover of the Ashford and Simpson classic “It Seems to Hang On” sounds right now.
Moore totally transforms an R&B/funk classic duet into a contemporary percussive trap and hip-hop infused R&B hit that can fit into the sound heard on Urban radio today. She reworked the lyrics some, but the theme about the lingering aftereffects a love affair remains.
Moore’s legendary career will make it “It Seems to Hang On” a good fit for urban adult contemporary while the contemporary production techniques would not make it out of place on outlets that cater to a younger demographic. The constant is the voice. Moore still sounds Marvelous. Check the tune out here.
