First Listen: Maxwell’s return is “Simply Beautiful”

Fans of iconic, sometimes enigmatic R&B singer Maxwell have been long waiting for the third album in the trilogy BlackSummersNight that he announced over a decade ago. The expected date of BlackSummersNIGHTwas more than two years ago, following the release of the single “Off.”

Fans are still waiting, but perhaps there a light ahead. Today Maxwell released the single “Simply Beautiful,” a cover of the classic Al Green ballad.

With a simply acoustic guitar in front of lush strings, the song lays out beautifully for Maxwell’s expressive tenor, which at times takes on an absolute Green-like falsetto.

This song is a keeper, and hopefully a signal that a full album is coming soon. Check out “Simply Beautiful” below.
