When Chris Rizik, our fearless leader, sent me the e-mail that contained the Soundcloud link to Matt Newsome’s new single, “The Real Thing,” he ended by saying “I do like this song.”
Oh, Chris aren’t you the master of understatement because you undersold this one. You probably should have added about 10 reallys, a couple of hand claps and starry eyed emojis. I’ve had my share of had-me-at-hello moments in the almost nine years that I have been on the SoulTracks staff (time does indeed fly when one is having a blast). I return to the works of artists I’ve reviewed such as Sy Smith and John Stoddart, and I could have named dozens of others. Not saying that the silky baritone is at that point because this is just one song. However, Mr. Newsome has given us one heck of a song. Give it a listen, I’m sure you will agree.
