(December 28, 2016) Indie music fans received their first glimpse of Mary Akpa on her 2012 EP, Brave. Akpa covered a lot of musical ground on a project that ranged from the acoustic soul title track to the jazz infused cut “Condition” that sported smoky saxophones, brushes on the drums and a pensive arrangement that nodded in the direction of Miles Davis’ classic “Blue In Green,” and the techno inspired “Don’t Stand in My Way.” So we know that Akpa is an artist in the truest sense of the word in that she is open to incorporating the full range of her musical influences.
So nobody will be surprised with Akpa’s decision to give listeners a hodgepodge of sound and influences on her latest single, “That Day On the Train,” a track that tells the story of two people who decided to act on the spark of interest initiated by that first glace. The track moves from pop to slashing, rock influenced guitars to gospel influences on the harmonized backing vocals. This track shows that Akpa is a talent that bears watching and listening to. Check it out.
