First Listen: Maralisa “Paints” a great song with SKRD

unnamed

Maralisa is a 22-year old San Francisco native currently living and working in Brooklyn. She is a graduate of The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, with vocals deeply rooted in an upbringing of blues and soul artists including Taj Mahal, Nina Simone, Jon Cleary and Amy Winehouse.

She is also now cowriter and frontwoman of Brooklyn based soul group Space Captain, recently signed to UK indie label Tru Thoughts (Bonobo, Hot 8 Brass Band, Alice Russell, The Seshen).

While we wait to hear from Space Captain, Maralisa has just issued a new single that caught our attention. “Paint” is assured in its sound, with a delicious groove and strong vocals up front. Maralisa tells us, “Paint pays tribute to the vibrancy of my mother’s artwork, whose influence swallowed me up and gave me a musical voice. It is also a reflection on the ways in which a community may flock to one family’s internal affairs, referring to the separation of my parents. Brooklyn emcee SKRD contributes to my story with similar details of his own upbringing.”

Check out “Paint” and tell us what you think!
