(May 9, 2018) There are lots of acts that claim loyalty to the sounds classic soul, but there are few that can deliver like UK’s The Magnificent Tape Band. The group, which is the alter ego of ATA Records founders Neil Innes & Pete Williams, is issuing its debut album, The Subtle Art of Distraction, on May 25, and the advance sounds are compelling.
Recorded entirely on vintage analogue recording equipment packed into an abandoned garage in Leeds, the LP features the vocal talents of Gospel-Inspired soul singer Rachel Modest, and a sound that touches upon some of the more experimental soul sounds of the 60s and early 70s.
One of the tracks from the upcoming album that struck us is “Pantomime,” a classic sounding song with a very current message. Rachel Modest tells us about the song: “Pantomime was written because I was just so pissed off with Theresa May (British Prime Minister). I felt the whole Brexit thing was like a pantomime. A play…almost unreal. She was just saying the same things over and over again…and I’d had enough!!”
We’re proud to present the World Premiere of “Pantomime.” Check it out below, and welcome The Magnificent Tape Band to SoulTracks!
