First Listen: Lin Rountree and Conya Doss Meet “In the Middle”

(January 22, 2024) He is a Billboard #1 Jazz Recording Artist known as the “Soul Trumpeter”; and she is called “The Queen of Indie Soul,” having been a major figure in independent music for over 20 years.

Lin Rountree and Conya Doss have been collaborating for over a decade, and now they’ve come together on a new song called “In the Middle.”  Lin describes it as “a powerful song about not letting conflict tear one another apart and how finding common ground can help overcome even the most challenging relationship issues.”  That’s definitely a relatable message because what couple hasn’t faced challenges in their relationship?  But the strong ones overcome and keep pushing.

The lyrics address that, saying in part:

Sure, we say some things that hurt sometimes
Sure, this takes a lot of work and tears
But somehow we manage to make it work, and I know why
I’m meeting in the middle…

This love song with a message is a nice blend of smooth jazz and R&B, but it could also be called ‘easy listening’ because it’s easy and enjoyable to listen to.  Conya, who is a previous SoulTracks Readers’ Choice Award winner, sings with style and grace, while Lin pours the “smooth” sauce on as his soulful trumpet effortlessly floats throughout the song. Lin and Conya complement each other well musically.

According to Lin, “In the Middle” was written about five years ago and was originally scheduled for release in 2020 but was delayed due to the pandemic.  But it’s here now.  He and Conya, his “sister in soul”, are excited for you to hear their song, so check it out below.
