Sometimes “retro” in soul music is delightful and somehow still original and compelling. More often, unfortunately, it’s just “retro” and does not merit repeated listenings in an era when you can access the original, better artists at the tap of your Spotify app.
Leon Bridges, a new singer/songwriter and guitarist from Ft. Worth, is releasing tracks from his upcoming debut album that are decidedly of the “original retro” variety. Imagine Sam Cooke dropping in to take over the vocals on Magic Sam’s “West Side Soul” sessions and you’ll have an idea of what you’re about to hear. Better yet, just listen and let the warmth of “Coming Home” — which is already catching the attention of BBC Radio 1 and fans like Jessie Ware — envelop you.
