The “you” in “You Are Loved” can also be… well, you.
Who hasn’t found themselves staring into a mirror speaking life and words of encouragement to ourselves? In a world where people seem to revel in making others feel like they don’t measure up, hearing that you are loved and valued is priceless whether you are speaking those words to a child, spouse or friend or saying them to yourself. And Avett says with the song she was particularly speaking to African American men who are doing great deeds that often go unnoticed.
The arrangement validates the positive message with it’s upbeat and optimistic vibe that features gospel inspired call and response between lead and backing vocals, jazz-inspired flourishes on the piano, and an insistent bass line that calls listeners to dance – or at least rhythmically nod their heads in agreement with the tune’s inspirational message.
