(July 31, 2023) One thing has been consistent throughout the career of trumpeter and vocalist Johnny Britt: Whether performing as a part of the duo Imprompt2 or out front alone as a solo artist, Britt’s work fuses the genres that have been influential in his career – jazz, R&B, and hip hop.
And Britt continues his explorations of how these distinct but connected art forms can intersect on his new song, “Summer Love,” that features contributions from Gerald Albright (bass) and rapper Kashan.
The track is a mid-tempo cut that will appeal to the steppers set. That means “Summer Love” is ideally suited for people who are already paired up on the dance floor, and the lyrics remind us that summer is also a time for pairings of a more intimate and romantic variety. Britt pairs his buttery tenor vocals behind mid-tempo foundation set by a smooth R&B bass line.
That bass provides a bottom for Britt’s flights of creative fancy on the trumpet. It also serves as a setup for hip-hop artist and longtime collaborator Kashan, whose flow moves effortlessly from melodic, to rapid fire to spoken word as he describes the transformative power that his summertime love possesses.
The song is supported by an artsy video that is shot on a beach in Malibu, Ca. by a high school videographer and producer named Sam Lenkov. Check out Johnny Britt’s “Summer Love” here.
