First Listen: Jeliz gives us that “Good Old Fashioned Love”

(April 10, 2024) For as much passion and pleasure as music brings to our everyday lives, just as much passion and pain goes into the process of getting those songs out to the public. There’s not any surefire path for aspiring artists to take to make it to the point of their songs and voices being heard by the masses.

Take, for example, singer-songwriter Jeliz and her debut solo single, “Good Old-Fashioned Love.” The Boston-born talent got a big break as a backing vocalist on Janet Jackson’s 2008 Rock Witchu Tour after graduating from Berklee College of Music and paying her dues via session work and consistent gigging. SoulTrackers might remember her lead vocal on Ian Martin’s “Treat You Right,” which has appeared on several respectable soul compilations. She also supported Jackson on a number of subsequent tours, in between several seasons on TV’s The Voice.

Two years ago, Jeliz relocated to Toronto and began collaborating with musicians and producers to shape her own artistic style. “Good Old-Fashioned Love,” an upbeat and summery groove woven together with sweetly layered vocal arrangements, retro-nuanced guitars and keyboard riffs, and feel-good percussive vibes, readily makes clear that the time and energy she has invested into crafting her sound has been worthwhile.

The convergence of elements of Jeliz’s early influences such as Whitney Houston and Donny Hathaway with eclectic shades of artists from other genres she’s worked with (Sting, Maroon 5) sparkle cohesively on “Good Old-Fashioned Love,” making it a delightful introduction to a singer whose time to shine is most deserved.
