First Listen: Hil St. Soul is “Done” with a bad romance

(September 19, 2024) With autumn just around the corner, some couples look forward to long walks through fallen leaves, sharing mugs of pumpkin spiced-whatever and linked arm in arm against the first signs of chill. Others, however, are fed up, too through and wanting to spin the block for another prospect — a sentiment that Hil St. Soul brings to life with an anguished, yet energetic send-off ballad, “I’m Done.”

Reminiscent of a seventies-era slow burner, yet brimming with steely resolve and self-care, it’s another irresistible listen from producer Regi Myrix and the UK-based soul, gospel-esque and jazz chanteuse Hilary Mwelwa, better known as Hil St. Soul. Lushly layered background vocals, that familiar supple soprano and lyrics that detail their love’s demise will have you all in your feelings, buying a bottle of bubbly and ready to help her pack: “I know I put my energy into you it’s never reciprocated/you treat me like an afterthought, a second choice/I love myself enough to leave the table when respect’s no longer being served, I deserve SO much more.”

Yes, winter is coming soon, but for some folks, the frostiness has already seeped in and it’s time to warm up with a new partner (or by yourself with that aforementioned bottle). We’ve all been there, but wish we had Hil St. Soul’s swan song back then to do the emotional labor for our battle-weary hearts. However, no matter what your present relationship status is, you’ll relate, bask in Hil’s return and end up singing along…….I mean, just in case right?
