(December 8, 2024) “Testify,” the new ballad by the Grammy nominated songwriting duo Helen Bruner and Terry Jones, is viewed as a wedding anthem. There’s good reason for that. Bruner and Jones express the sentiments that make “Testify” the kind of song that can be played as the wedding party walks down the aisle or even a tune played for the newly married couple’s first dance.
“Testify” is both a declaration of the qualities that make one person fall in love with another and a pledge to make a lifelong commitment. At one point the duo declares that their partner should not say another word: “It’s time for you to accept the compliments that I pay.” Those lyrics are a reminder of how easily true love makes it to shower those we care about with praise.
And those words of admiration do flow easily in the song “Testify.” Testimony is a spiritual expression of faith in the divine and awe in the power God’s delivering, healing and transforming power. Soul music’s power comes from its penchant to use that same language and imagery to celebrate romantic love.
