(February 3, 2017) Anita Baker’s “I Apologize”; Tamia’s “Falling for You”; The Isley Brothers’ “Just Came Here to Chill”…just a few of the dozens of bona fide soul gems that Bronx native Gordon Chambers has penned over the past three decades. SoulTrackers are also quite familiar with the Grammy winner’s vocal fire, displayed on his own albums like 2007’s Love Stories and 2011’s Sincere.
Chambers’ new CD, Surrender, finds him delving deeper into personal experiences, and the second single, “Back to Love,” sets a welcoming tone. A duet with none other than Lalah Hathaway, the tune explores the familiar theme of rekindling a burnt-out romance with fresh and relatable lyrical passages. “We wine and dine like everything is fine, perfecting how to pretend,” he relates. “Can we get back to…the days when we could have a fight and laugh about it all night?” Chambers and Hathaway develop an inviting blend on the hook-friendly groove, exuding matter-of-fact, soothingly smooth phrasing that conveys the message quite effectively.
