(May 24, 2023) If there is a family that can justifiably call itself music royalty, it’s the Womack family. Members of the Womack family have been making music for all or part of eight decades. Womack brothers Friendly Jr., Cecil, Curtis, and Bobby broke ground as gospel singing group The Womack Brothers in the 1950s before crossing over into R&B music as The Valentinos.
Bobby Womack earned the greatest commercial and critical success as a solo artist, but all the brothers made their mark in the music business. As three of the four brothers passed away over the years, a new generation of family members such as Binky Womack and The Womack Sisters have emerged.
However, the surviving brother, Friendly Womack, Jr., continues to make music, and with his latest single, “God Is Good,” he returns to his gospel music roots. Friendly Womack is in his early 80s, but you wouldn’t know that when you hear him sing. His voice has an edge while also managing to sound velvety as he sings about how God’s goodness continues to be a sustaining presence in his life.
That spiritual and uplifting message is delivered via an instrumental smooth R&B instrumental arrangement that will make this a song that can get airplay on gospel and secular radio stations. Friendly Womack said that he’s always felt that he was in his comfort zone when singing gospel music: “I’ve always felt that I’m just a singer who happens to sing secular music, and that’s what people love about me. But I want them to know that when I sing gospel music; it’s not just for show.”
