First Listen: The Freedom Affair celebrates “Love”

Kansas City-based ensemble The Freedom Affair garnered a sizable following several years ago with its debut album Freedom Is Love and singles like the sassy “Rise Up” and easy-groovin’ “Outta My Mind.” For the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic, the group is releasing one of its recordings from that turbulent time period. “Love Is Love” is an idyllic and retro-licious midtempo number brimming with beauteous horns, sly drum fills, and a quietly snagging bassline. Exquisitely understated, it culminates with a modulated chorus awash with vocal cadences to sublimely envelop the affair. All along, the supple unison leads and harmonies of singers Seyko, Shon, and Paula tenderly deliver a definition of love that is inclusive and judgment-free.

The first of four tracks planned for unveiling this year in anticipation of The Freedom Affair’s sophomore album, “Love Is Love” is complemented wonderfully by a feel-good and festive video showcasing the ladies performing in an intimate space patronized by loving couples of varying shades, sizes, and gender orientations. The authentic expressions and movements of these partners enhances the mood and message of the track splendidly.

Check out The Freedom Affair’s video for “Love Is Love” and be transported to an unaffected and mellow soundscape of groove and melody accompanied by colorful images of couples enjoying love for what it is.
