(August 7, 2024) Singer Erin Stevenson “almost” walked down the path blazed by the pioneers portrayed in the movie, “Hidden Figures.”
Music being Ms. Stevenson’s calling, she was unhappy with her job at NASA. Finally she had enough and demanded walking papers from her boss when she placed her demo on the desk. Erin then dared to have NASA let her go if her music sounded good or stay “if (the boss) felt like I sucked” (her own words). Notice was granted that evening and Erin walked out the door.
Fast forward to the present. Several gigs backing the likes of John Legend and Justin Timberlake later, Erin reveals the new single, “Almost,” from her second album, Cover Girl Uncovered.
Sticking with the smooth jazz/soul path that brought Erin much airplay and success, “Almost” is a mellow, midtempo groove. Showing off her sweet soprano, Erin spells out the story of a past love who is now with a woman who “came after” Ms. Stevenson to take possession of this man. “You get the best of me…she gets the best of you,” as Erin points out in the chorus, lamenting that she was “almost” the one.
(Writer’s Note – “Almost” is based on a real life situation Erin did encounter. Her ex is now married to the “homewrecker” and proclaimed being miserable. Karma is a….well, you know)
Erin’s story within the song comes across wistfully without bitterness. She allows her voice to ride the wave perfectly with the music. A solid “banger” (as the Brits would say) that fits perfectly within the Quiet Storm radio format.
While she is currently on tour backing Justin Timberlake, Erin is a gifted chanteuse who deserves the spotlight on her own. The proof is in her music.
