First Listen: Eric Roberson and BJ The Chicago Kid ask “Where You Gonna Go?”

(April 8, 2025) For the years I’ve followed the works and career of Neo-Soul leader Eric Roberson, he’s never failed to impress. For the past 20 plus years, Eric has released 17 albums independently, while earning many accolades along the way. Grammy nominations, honors from BET and other platforms are just collective icings on a delicious cake, flavored with soul, Gospel and hip-hop.

His latest release, “Where You Gonna Go,” finds Eric teaming up with BJ The Chicago Kid. On this midtempo, steady yet rocking rhythm inspired by good ol’ Black church Gospel, Eric kicks off with a spoken “sermonette” stating that the message may be for you and himself, while giving praise to the Almighty. Then comes the chorus, in which Roberson and BJ encourage the listener to move forward in your path, even though you don’t know just where you are going.  There may be mountains to climb and even if help is there, moving up that incline is up to the individual.

“Where You Gonna Go” would make a great addition to a church choir or group’s repertoire, alongside great works from contemporaries such as Commissioned and Kirk Franklin. Eric and BJ have a message that speaks to today’s days and times. A message that is very much needed.
