(July 15, 2021) Much has been written about the Tulsa Race Massacre, a sad day in American history, the 100th anniversary of which is being commemorated in 2021. And as part of this commemoration is the upcoming multi-artist, multi-genre project, 1921…The Black Wall Street Music Project.
In May, we shared with SoulTrackers the album’s powerful single “The Sun Will Rise Again” by Doc Shaw ft. Lester Shaw and Retsel Shaw, a number that showed the inspiration to be gained by witnessing the spirit of a thriving black community in the time of a segregated America.
Doc Shaw wrote “The Sun Will Rise Again” back in 1984 but recently recorded it, tapping his sons to breathe new life into an inspirational lyric about life after a metaphorical rain through the lens of love. Seeking a higher vibration, Lester, who gained his world class polish touring with Nile Rodgers and Chic, sings “love is strong enough to conquer, let it shine for me and you…” In the context of the Race Massacre Centennial, it becomes a song of reconciliation for a city that is still healing after decades of hiding from the truth.
Now comes the video for “The Sun Will Rise Again,” a dramatic piece that shows both the beauty and the tension around the message of this song. Watch it below, and be sure to check out the full 1921…The Black Wall Street Music Project.when it is released later this year.
