(April 24, 2024) “What We Want,” the new song by DetroitCentriX, is a cut where two members of the Motor City’s musical elite state their desire for humanity to reach its highest calling, while also being a love letter to the city they call home.
“What We Want” is an inspirational duet featuring Kathy Kosins and Paul Randolph. Anyone remotely familiar with Detroit’s musical scene – particularly as it pertains to soul, jazz, funk, alternative and blues – knows about or has heard music impacted by Kosins and Randolph. Kosins is known for her work as a backing vocalist with Michael Henderson and Was/Not Was and some of the great jazz and soul that she has made as a solo artist. Randolph has worked with the late blues and funk master keyboardist Amp Fiddler, rock legend Alice Cooper and techno pioneer Carl Craig, all Detroit-based artists.
So, like all Detroiters, Kosins and Randolph have a deep love for the city they call home. It comes through in “What We Want,” a funk anthem that stands at DetroitCentriX’s call for people seek and find their mission in life. In doing so, they will make the world a better place.
“What We Want” is an infectious call to action. The video that accompanies the tune alternates between footage of Randolph and Kosins singing in a studio and images – both past and present – of Detroit.
Many of those images are murals painted on walls, buildings and other structures in the city, and that artwork is strikingly beautiful. Those images show Detroit to be an alive, vibrant, and optimistic city. “What We Want” is DetroitCentriX’s call for everyone to work to maintain that life, vibrancy, and optimism.
