As an honorary “Southern Girl” by way of the Midwest, I’ve become accustomed to all things big—-hair, trucks, and yes, egos. But like the saying goes, “it ain’t braggin’ if you can do it,” so Desmond Owens had to come correct while using his latest single to proclaim himself a “Child of Neo-Soul.”
A deft tapestry of R&B classics, stylings and vocal deliveries (Nina Simone’s “Four Women,” Erykah Badu’s “On & On” and Jill Scott’s “The Way”), the emerging artistry of Owens is apparent from the ranges he vocally explores and his recognition of the influence the performers continue to have. Will his swag help his career go “on and on” in “the way” of Desmond’s musical mothers? Time will tell, but this “Child of Neo Soul” sure has the potential to realize his dreams.
