(March 18, 2019) We’ve been covering DC-based singer and entrepreneur Desi Hill since the early days of SoulTracks, and we always enjoy hearing new music from him. SoulTrackers may remember Desi for his work with other regional stalwarts like the late, great Al Johnson.
Desi’s newest release is a tribute to a lifelong favorite artist, Marvin Gaye, that also features singer Gail Patterson. Desi tells us, “I grew up a Marvin Gaye fan, and I had this idea in my head for years. I told the late great Al Johnson my concept, and he said, ‘Damn Hill, I think you’ve got something there.’ So he put the arrangement together, but we didn’t get the chance to record it, due to his untimely death. Stan Jones (a friend and a great keyboardist from DC who now lives in LA) picked up the mantle and did a great update production. “
The song, “We Remember Marvin and Tammi,” is a medley that captures the joy of the original duets of the two legendary singers. “The duet couple of Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell is the best ever to me, I think it’s because of the writing of Valerie Simpson and the late great Nickolas Ashford. I thought that it would be a great way to pay homage to this legendary singing duo.”
